More Than a Picnic: Building a Community Around Food Allergy Treatment.
Yesterday, families, researchers, clinicians, volunteers and supporters came together for our Family Fun Day, presented by the Canadian FAIT Foundation and Daiya Foods.
For many families, one of the most meaningful parts of the day was simply meeting others who understood their journey.
Food allergy treatment can be life-changing, but the path to get there can also be long and unfamiliar. Families shared how special it was to meet other parents, watch their children play together, compare experiences and realize that they are part of a much larger community.
“Food allergies can feel isolating. It's always nice to know that other parents are going through the same journey.”
Celebrating how far these kids have come
One of the highlights of the afternoon was celebrating children who have reached important milestones in their food allergy treatment journeys.
Graduation caps came out, certificates were handed out, and families had a chance to recognize just how far they and their children have come.

These moments are a wonderful reminder of why this work matters. Behind every research study, treatment protocol and dataset is a child gaining greater protection from accidental exposure, and a family gaining more freedom and confidence in everyday life.
For some of the newer faces at the event, Family Fun Day was also an opportunity to see firsthand the impact that food allergy treatment, research and education are having on families across BC.
“I never imagined attending a gathering where there was food present and not checking the label to make sure that food was safe.”
Watching knowledge travel beyond our walls
Perhaps one of the most exciting moments of the day was meeting two families who are not patients of the FAIT Program at BC Children’s Hospital. Their children are receiving treatment through a community allergy clinic whose allergist learned how to provide food allergy treatment from Dr. Edmond Chan and the FAIT team.
That may sound like a small detail. To us, it represents something much bigger.
The goal has never been for innovative food allergy treatment to exist only within the walls of an academic hospital. We want the knowledge generated through research and clinical experience to travel to other allergists, other clinics and, ultimately, more families.
Seeing children benefiting from this work outside of our traditional hub at BC Children’s Hospital was an incredibly meaningful glimpse of what is possible when we invest not only in research, but in sharing what we learn.

This is how a community grows
We left Family Fun Day feeling incredibly grateful to the families who shared their stories, the children who proudly celebrated their accomplishments, the volunteers and supporters who made the afternoon possible, and everyone who believes in a future where families living with food allergy have access to more than avoidance alone.

Research creates knowledge. Education helps that knowledge travel. And community brings people together around a shared belief that something better is possible.
Yesterday, we saw all three in action.
We can't wait to continue growing this community—and to help what started here reach more families, more clinicians and more communities across Canada.
