Living with food allergy
Food allergy is more than avoiding certain foods. For families, it can mean constant label checking, planning ahead, carrying emergency medication, and worrying about an accidental exposure at school, restaurants, celebrations, or while travelling.
-
Food allergy affects about 1 in 13 Canadians.
-
Even a small accidental exposure can cause a serious allergic reaction, making everyday activities involving food more complicated and stressful.
There is more we can do than simply avoid.
What is Food Allergy Immunotherapy ?
For decades, managing food allergy has largely meant avoiding the allergen and carrying emergency medication in case of an accidental exposure. Food allergy immunotherapy (FAIT) offers another approach.
Under the care of a trained healthcare provider, patients are exposed to carefully controlled amounts of their allergen over time. The goal is to increase the amount of food it takes to trigger a reaction, providing greater protection from accidental exposures.
Immunotherapy is not a cure for food allergy, and patients still need to follow the advice of their healthcare team. But for many families, treatment can mean something incredibly important: less fear around food and more freedom to participate in everyday life.
Our Story
We started with a group of families who believed children with food allergy deserved more than avoidance. See how that idea grew into a national mission.
